Lund Builders provides real-world learning through CVTC construction project
The company works with CVTC instructor Justin Borgwardt to match a home design with a suitable lot. If the lot isn’t already owned by Lund Builders, it is purchased prior to construction. Subcontractors receive bid requests outlining the scope of work, with a clear understanding that students will provide most of the labor and carpentry.
Before the school year begins, Lund Builders secures permits, completes excavation, pours footings and the basement and finishes the backfill.
Co-owner Tami Kuchera coordinates with Borgwardt to select construction and finishing materials.
“This includes paint, stain, hardware and placement as well as exterior elements and so on,” she said.
Tami and her husband Todd, also a co-owner, complete the initial walk-through for electrical, plumbing and cabinet measurements. Todd handles subcontractor scheduling, inspection coordination and on-site meetings.
The project offers students real-world construction experience.
“Throughout the building process, we are able to connect Borgwardt with subcontractors who are willing to do some instruction on site as well as off site with the students,” Tami said.
For example, students observe a technician performing computerized measurements for the solid surface countertops. They learn how the data is used by fabricators and later visit the fabrication facility to watch the material being cut.
“There are great opportunities on and off site that provide an additional scope of work experience in order to give students a broader understanding of career possibilities,” Tami said.
Lund Builders has served as the program’s general contractor since its launch in 2020.
